Better Together: Meaghan Kelly

Meet Meaghan, someone who quickly nestled into a spot in my heart and without whom I’d not look or feel as good as I do!

Meaghan is a white, gender non-conforming, queer woman from a lower middle class background. She is able-bodied, neurodivergent and still very much learning about the land she/we live on (Tiohtià:ke aka Montreal).

We grew close after finding some solace in each other’s outlook and senses of humor when Covid hit last year. Since then, she has become a trusted confidant, a sounding board, and a reliable asset to my sanity given that we have started working together! She helps keep me organized and on top of things (as best I can), all with so much love and patience and wit and grit.

It is in part due to her presence and cheerleading that I have decided to embark on a long-term semi-sabbatical! I’m telling you, she’s one special person. You can get a glimpse of here below and I highly recommend you follow her to get to know her more.

What does a typical practice entail?

I have a pretty sacred morning routine (like, I will wake up at 4am if I need to so I can have the time and space to stick to it, I love it so much!) but recently, we’ve had a few sunny winter days in a row, and there’s one spot in my kitchen that gets really direct sunlight, and I pour some kernels into my popcorn maker and sit in a chair in the sunbeam and stay there with my eyes closed until the popcorn is done popping and … it’s the best.

Who are your major inspirations? Why?

I feel really lucky because I get to say very honestly that some of my greatest inspirations are also my closest friends and loved ones. My partner Heidi is a big one, my lil Sis and my parents. And you (Dawn!) and all of my buddies who are strong, intentional teachers and artists and entrepreneurs making the world a better place through their thoughtful actions. On a broader scale, my major influences are mostly literary and include Mary Oliver, Jeanette Winterson, Toni Morrison, Ocean Vuong and a slew of others. And don’t let any of this fool you into thinking that I don’t also totally fan girl out over folks like Zendaya and Jenny Slate and Marlee Grace and Adrienne Maree Brown. Mostly, I'm inspired by anyone who creates for creation's sake.

What are you practicing for?

For staying open to Delight :)

Where can we find you?

Under less controlled circumstances, you can find me at the public library. These days, you can find me at @doingjust.fine or via my Mighty Networks Community
